I was chatting with my colleague David Woolley today about the Google and Yahoo search engines. His site, ThinkofIt, includes “a comprehensive guide to software that powers discussions on the Internet.” Doing a Google search on the word “conferencing” and other similar terms brings up his site first, and he’s been making money now selling ads on his site.
So I did a Google search on the phrase “small business weblogs“.
A blog entry I posted last November came up 4th on Google’s list because I’d linked to Dan Bricklin’s article using that phrase as the title. His article was titled slightly differently, “Small Business Blogging” and doesn’t appear at all directly… only via the mention of other sites.
I got a little excited about this till I did a search on the words [small business weblogs] without enclosing them in quotes. It does bring up Bricklin’s article. Interestingly, though, it’s also 4th. And then my blog entry isn’t seen till #42.
Some of my clients are not businesses so technically speaking, they maintain non-profit weblogs, city weblogs, and politician weblogs. That’s another Google challenge.
