Internal vs external blogs in organizations

Business 2.0: Management by Blog? Some see it coming, but it’s not here yet.

“The internal blogs that succeed will be safe, clean, well-lit virtual places in which diverse opinions are welcome and ideas — not people — are judged. Companies should always explore new ways of getting messages out and new tactics for fostering idea-exchange among the staff, but right now the blogging action is almost exclusively for external readers.”

Google and weblogs

Google CEO Eric Schmidt in an AlwaysOn interview:

“I believe that this notion of self-publishing, which is what Blogger and blogging are really about, is the next big wave of human communication. The last big wave was Web activity. Before that one it was e-mail. Instant messaging was an extension of e-mail, real-time e-mail. The next step in general for information is the self-publishing part. If somebody takes the time to write something, having Google understand that is very important to that person. So if you view the world as one person at a time, getting that person, that author to understand that we value, we index, we search, and we care about their information is a very important part of our strategy.”

More on RSS

The Newspaper Association of America site has an informative article titled Syndication Made Simple.

“Just as free e-mail newsletters enable publishers to directly reach readers and promote online and in-paper content, RSS “pushes” headlines and succinct, one-sentence article descriptions to those who subscribe to the no-cost feeds.”

If you’re a weblog/website client and would like to have RSS enabled, let me know.

The Blog from City Hall in the news

The Eden Prairie Sun-Current newspaper has a feature this week titled Eden Prairies city manager Scott Neal begins a Weblog by reporter Merrily Helgeson.

Neal said he views his blog as a new way to report to the city. It will provide a more insiders view of issues that are affecting the city in general, he said. Wigley had kind of given me a push, Neal said. Get out in front in terms of working with citizens, help them be better citizens. This is a new venue to do that.
