On the road to Grand Rapids

I’ll be in Grand Rapids, Minnesota today and tomorrow for meetings at the Blandin Foundation where we’ll be discussing citizen journalism / community media initiatives in rural Minnesota.  Or to put it in my current favorite lingo:

How can online “weapons of mass collaboration” be used to
strengthen the fabric of local neighborhoods and communities?

I may do some mobile blogging via my cell phone — both photos and audio — so watch for some unattributed content as I’m not fond of thumbing explanatory text, prefer to do that via laptop once I’ve got an internet connection.

Update at 7:45 PM: Some photos of Blandin Foundation headquarters on the Mississippi River. Click to enlarge.

Moblogging from the Citizens League and MPR

I’m heading out this morning for this event:

The Future of the Web and Civic Engagement: What Happens When MySpace Meets Our Space? It’s part of the Citizens League’s Summer Policy series and is being held at The Forum at Minnesota Public Radio.

Featured presenters include Tom Swain, Jean LeVander King, Jen Alstad, Steve Borsch, and Garrick Van Buren.

I hope to be capturing some audio and photos and might do a little moblogging from the event.

3:30 pm update: I did moblog one photo but it was blurry so I deleted it. One or more posts on the event — with some photos — to come.

Team e2e4e departs

Over the weekend, a team of cyclists from the Royal Borough of Kingston in the UK began cycling from the southern tip of the UK to the northern tip (1000+ miles in 15 Stages), in aid of Asian earthquake relief. The event is called E2E4E – End to End for Earthquake.

From my UK travels and involvement in the ReadMyDay project I have colleagues and bloggers in Kingston and so I’ve helped set up a weblog, a podcast, and a photo album to support this event. See the main website, the blog, and considering donating to the cause. And follow the trip as it progresses with regular weblog updates from my colleagues in the saddle, Roy Taylor and Herbie Blackburn.

e2e4e: End to End for Earthquake

Roy Taylor
At 11 yesterday, I met with Roy Taylor, Director of Community Services for Kingston Upon Thames.

Roy is the organizer of this summer’s e2e4e: End to End for Earthquake in which a “team of cyclists from the Royal Borough of Kingston are cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats (1,000+ miles in 15 Stages), in aid of Asian earthquake relief.”

This event will raise money for two charities, the British Red Cross – Asian Earthquake Appeal, and the Fountain House Lahore Project.

Roy and I are strategizing on how blogging, podcasting and videoblogging can be utilised before, during and after the trip.
